Many people wonder how often to shampoo their hair and if they are using the correct amount. To be able to give a good answer to these questions, let's start by addressing three different hair types: dry, oily, and normal.
If you have dry hair you should be washing a maximum of two times a week. If you have oily hair you will probably be washing it every day of the week to keep it looking presentable. If you have normal hair that's not too oily or dry then you are able to wash your hair whenever you feel like you need to.
The best shampoo to use if you have oily hair is a shampoo that is water based and has water as one of the first three ingredients. At Sheared Treasures we recommend our Original Sprout Natural Shampoo that can help keep oily and/or dry hair looking great while diminishing dandruff. We
recommend Reuzel Daily Shampoo for people with normal hair. If you use a lot of products daily or work outside in the environment I would also recommend using our Glop and Glam clarify shampoo. This shampoo is only to be used 1 or 2 days a week tops. Clarifying Shampoos strip all oils and build up from the hair so you do not want to strip all the oils out often. After you clarify, you need to use a moisturizing shampoos and conditioners to replace those oils. Your hair and scalp will thank you!
Now that we have clarified how often to wash your hair let's discuss how many times to shampoo it while you are in the shower. The correct amount of times to wash your hair while in the shower is TWO times, and here's why; the first shampoo washes out the oils, removes daily product off scalp so that hair follicles don’t get blocked and cause scalp inflammation and irritation. The second shampoo washes your hair and preps it either for the rest of the day or for the following day, depending on if you take morning or night showers.
A good example of this might be to imagine you are a mechanic and you've been working all day and now you're headed home to take a nice shower and clean up after a long day. When you shampoo your hair that first time it gets out all the gunk and nastiness from the day's work. That second wash actually washes your hair and gets it ready for the next day of work.
How much shampoo do I use?
The average amount of shampoo that needs to be used is the size of a quarter in your palm. For a smaller Childs hair you would need a little less than a quarter size. The shampoo is for the scalp and hair follicles at the scalp. When you shampoo twice as instructed this size is plenty. When you shampoo the second time you should notice that it lathered faster and left your scalp feels like it breathes a little better.
When you shampoo you should give you scalp a little 30 second massage and use your nails gently throughout the whole scalp to break up the products, buildup and dry skin flakes (dandruff).
Wash, rinse, repeat.
I know I am a little bias, but our ladies at Sheared Treasures do the best scalp massages if you want to try one out.
